Utter perfection, the 2010 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon (a 610-case blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc; 14.5% natural alcohol) boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a staggering bouquet of spring flowers, graphite, creme de cassis, kirsch, licorice and subtle toast in the background. Opulent and full-bodied with a multidimensional personality, gorgeous purity and a stunning, flawless texture, this spectacular wine is among the wines of the vintage. Under the ownership of Stan Kroenke, this vineyard has been replanted and a new cellar has been constructed. The production of Screaming Eagle has remained between 700-1,000 cases, and a second wine, the Second Flight, includes 520-800 cases. The introduction of a second wine is an attempt to keep Screaming Eagle at its mythical level of quality. This vineyard, situated on the valley floor at the Oakville Crossroads across the road from the Rudd Estate, encompasses 60 acres, but only a small percentage is used for these two cuvees. Based on the three vintages I tasted, it appears the Second Flight wines include much less Cabernet Sauvignon and more Merlot than the flagship Screaming Eagle.

Supple at points, young and herbal, this shows dried currant, herb and cedar notes that have a firm tannic grip. Second Flight, Screaming Eagle's second bottling, flies below the primary label, but shares some attributes. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Hands down, the most renowned California cult wine that has ever been produced...so far. It all started from modest beginnings when Jean Philips a former real estate agent bought a 57 acre Oakville vineyard in 1986. She sold off all the grapes to other wineries apart from one 1-acre plot (0.40 ha) of Cabernet Sauvignon from which she wanted to make her own wine. Heidi Peterson Barret became winemaker and the 1992, the first commercial vintage, was released in 1996. It was reviewed immediately by Robert Parker who bestowed it with an incredible 99 points, describing it as "one of the greatest young Cabernets I have ever tasted." After this the Eagle took flight. She replanted her vineyards that same year (1995) to 3 varieties in order to produce a whopping 500 cases per vintage (which has increased to 600-700 since). Today, it still remains the most expensive California red wine on the secondary market. Despite the extroverted styles of other California cult wines, Screaming Eagle remains one of the most elegant and balanced. In 2006, it was purchased by Charles Banks and Stan Kroenke, who then hired Michel Rolland as consultant. Charles sold his shares in 2009 making Stan the sole owner.
