The organic Grattamacco 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese fermented in conical oak vats and aged in barrique for 18 months. The vintage is fruit-driven for sure, and this expression shows nice detailing in terms of the quality and structure of the tannins. The bouquet is focused on grilled cherry and mixed berry. You definitely get a warm, earthy quality with black licorice and sweet Mediterranean tones. It should be interesting to see how it evolves. Production is 60,000 bottles. 2025 - 2045

Aromatic nose of blackcurrants, berries and cherries, together with hints of flowers and smooth oak. Full-bodied with a super-clean and intense bead of fruit running through the lightly firm tannins to give a long, only lightly abrasive finish. From organically grown grapes. A classy, well-structured blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and sangiovese. Drinkable now, but better from 2024.
93 Wine Spectator
Elegant and linear in profile, this red boasts cherry, black currant, mineral, earth and Mediterranean scrub aromas and flavors. There's fine tension and freshness, with a long, resonant aftertaste. Needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. Best from 2025 through 2042. 5,400 cases made, 430 cases imported.

Podere Grattamacco
Situated between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, the Podere Grattamacco estate sites on a picturesque hilltop facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. Founded in 1997 by Piermario Meletti Cavallari, the winery is currently owned by Claudio Tipa of the ColleMassari Group. A pioneer in the region, Grattamacco was the second estate to commercialize wine production in this now-famous appellation, Bolgheri. The work of founder, Piermario led to the redefinition of Bolgheri reds – refined, harmonious wines perfumed of spice, floral and herb scents. Today, Claudio and consulting enologist, Maurizio Castelli organically farm the 50-hectare property. The land is made up of woodlands, olive groves and 25-hectares of vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Vermentino. The upward sloping hills of the property provide a unique micro-climate defined by dry and consistent bursts of thermal waves. The recently renovated winery produces several first-rate reds, as well as one highly sophisticated white, the Bolgheri Vermentino.
