The blackberry, licorice, cocoa and cola flavors are ripe and lean toward sweetness in this plush red, but a vein of mineral keeps this balanced. The thick texture is supported by well-integrated tannins, and balsamic acidity keeps this lively. Modern-style, dense and balanced. Drink now through 2027. 40 cases imported. –TM

The 2012 Aalto PS was cropped from a warm, ripe vintage when the grapes were very healthy. This cuvée of selected old vineyards is always matured in new French oak barrels for some 22-24 months. It's still a baby full of aromas of sweet spices, cinnamon and vanilla, also cloves and black peppercorns over the core of ripe plums, black cherries and a smoky, still oaky character. It has sweeter tannins and it is more accessible right now than the 2013 PS because it is rounder and fleshier. But in the long run the 2013 should age longer. This is a style that is very popular, ripe, showy and generously oaked. 20,000 bottles produced

Mariano García, owner of Bodegas Mauro and Maurodos, is originally known for his work at the Spanish icon, Vega Sicilia. Today, he is busy running his own Aalto estate which he founded with partner, Javier Zaccagnini in 1999. With a shared goal to craft concentrated, dense, and modern-styled wines from Ribera del Duero, the young winery has grown tremendously in the past years. The 42-hectare property is farmed organically, and spread across the provinces of Valladolid and Burgos. Their flagship and most popular wine, a pure Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo), Aalto, is extremely dense and fruitful. The 2012 vintage was even ranked number six in The Wine Spectator’s “The Top 10 Wines of 2015”.
