The 1987 Masseto comes across as quite floral, delicate and understated, with lovely definition in its fruit. I don’t think the 1987 has too many more years of fine drinking left, but it is undeniably impressive in every way right now. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. <br/>

A smoky version, with a plum cake and resin bouquet. This is thinning out, but still has some vestiges of fruit, along with lifted acidity and tannins. Merlot.—Non-blind Masseto vertical (October 2017). Drink now.

This was the first official vintage of this wine, even though a pure merlot was made at Ornellaia in 1986. It's still round and juicy but it shows a Madeira character to it. A little tired. Drink now.

Masseto
Masseto is without a question, recognized as one of Italy's most iconic wines. A unique vineyard of just 7-hectares, planted upon soil rich in Pliocene clays, blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate and gentle sea breezes: this is the birthplace of Masseto. Set on a gently sloping hill, the vineyard is divided into three sections, which contain different clay-based soil types. The distinct variances between soil, climate, terrain, and tradition make up Masseto’s magnificent terroir. This is nurtured by a passionate and dedicated team which approaches each step of the harvesting and vinification meticulously. In the search of excellence, all of these components come together producing a unique wine, with impressive complexity and sublime elegance.
