It was created when half of Château Desmirail, a Third Growth Margaux, was added to an existing vineyard as the result of an inheritance. The estate came into the hands of the eponymous Monsieur de Monbrison and was then acquired by Monsieur Chaix d’Est-Ange, a famous lawyer and President of the French Senate, who transformed it into a model vineyard. Château Monbrison once again changed hands in 1887 when it was purchased by the négociant Jean Clanis. His family in turn sold Monbrison to Robert Meacham Davis in 1922, and the estate has since been managed by his children and grandchildren. Laurent Vonderheyden has been in charge for the past twenty years, transforming Château Monbrison into one of the leading wines in its appellation. The wines are now admired by critics and the quality speaks for itself. Monbrison is the essence of a great Margaux.
