A venerable winemaking figure in the Barolo region, Elio Altare has been awarded with countless honors from wine critics, vinous associations and top connoisseurs. A true pioneer, he has shown his dedication to the art of winemaking through his consistent innovations and improvements. The Elio Altare winery was founded in 1948 by Giuseppe Altare, and has since remained family-owned. Today, Elio, at the forefront of Barolo production, has gone against his father’s traditional values, and instead follows a strict regime in the vineyards, as well as adopting new vinification and aging techniques in the cellars. Along with his eldest daughter, Silvia, his current production favors elegance, finesse and balance. The family manages ten hectares of vineyards, five of which are on loan, mostly located in La Morra, but also in Varolo, Castiglione Falletto, Monforte and Serralunga d’Alba. Elio’s wines are simple and natural, farmed organically, and never filtered nor clarified, they are frankly unsurpassable.
