One of Burgundies top quality négociant/producers who owns an impressive 130 hectares of their own vineyard land (including 12 Grand Crus, 74 Premier Crus and 4 Monopoles) in addition to wine from purchased grapes. It was founded in 1731 by Michel Bouchard and by 1775, Michel's son Joseph had begun acquiring their first vineyards in Volnay Caillerets. During the French Revolution when vineyards belonging to the clergy and nobility were seized, Joseph's son, Antoine Philibert Joseph Bouchard, took the opportunity to extend their family's holding in Beaune, including the famous Beaune Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus. Throughout the years they continued to grow and produce first-rate wines, but during the 1970s and 1980s - two difficult decades for Burgundy - the quality of their wines declined and in 1995 the company was sold to Champagne house, Henriot, who still owns the company today. The wines are made by Philippe Prost, a driven yet reflective man who has been with the Bouchards since 1978.
